Auldcathie - Growing Area

April - 2022

As you've hopefully heard we have a new growing area which is 1.5 acres situated in Auldcathie park for all of the community to enjoy!

We've listened to the ideas from you in our community through drop in sessions, online and through the local schools.

It's time for us to prep the land ready for the community cabin, planters, paths, and growing areas to be added.

Last Saturday some potatoes and flower for Ukraine where planted - but we have lot's to do.

This Saturday 2nd April pop along to the Community Growing Area from 12pm and get involved in several activities:

What need done this Saturday? (2nd April)

12:00PM Land Prep

The area needs to be prepped and clear of all stones. If you can help out, we have the rakes for volunteers to help (Organic compost and rotavator will be delivered soon)

12:30PM Growing Towers

It's important for us to grow as much food and fauna in a small area for all to enjoy. We have installed our first growing towers at the first entrance to the growing area, these are our first test towers to check they can withstand the high wind in the park (recycled and made in the UK). We hope to add these throughout the growing area for all to pick from while enjoying a stroll through the growing area. Our first two towers are to be planted up with strawberries on Saturday, come help plant them up and share your ideas and what you would like to grow in the area/get more involved...

13:30 Planters Built

On Saturday pop along and help build planters from sleepers, brackets and screws to fill with soil and grow seeds from.

14:00 Tree Planting

950 trees have been delivered to be planted in the community woodland area in Auldcathie park - Come and help the Family Forest with as many trees as possible planted.

Water!

We have a 1000L water tank to fill to help us with watering in the meantime - Please help with filling some tanks.

No need to reply to this email - Simply turn up on the day and get involved, look out for Hi-Vis volunteers for any guidance/first aid (If you can help with support let us know.

Please pass on this information on to your friends, family and neighbours! All information can be found on the growers website.

Community Consultation

Did you read the exciting news about Scotland's largest new district park? Read the full Winchburgh Developments Limited PRESS RELEASE

Winchburgh Community Growing Group constituted members where invited by Penny for a walkabout of the new park while under construction until spring 2021.  We were met by Andy of IHBrown and learned about how the space is being transformed and created beginning with the clearing and levelling of land - It was amazing to learn some of the dozers where guided by GPS to ensure pin point accuracy to achieve the correct measurements and ground cuts.

On the walk it was great to catch up with Becky (Open Space Officer) who we have worked closely with from West Lothian Council and met Carol from the Central Scotland Green Network Trust who shared some news about potential funding opportunities.

Beth (who designed the new park) and Ian from op-en also shared the news about the special types of soil that will be used for growing different types of trees and ensuring the growing area will have rich soil - Great for growing food and fruit trees!

One highlight was standing at the peak of the new park and taking in the breath taking views of the new park.
420 tress from the woodland trust should be planted in the coming winter and everyone is invited to take part!
