Tatties

Potatoes, potaahhtous, tatties, we love them, don't we?

Let's talk about potatoes today.

First varieties...how many different types of potatoes do you know?
Mary pipers, Kind Edward, Jersey, Charlotte....any more for any more?
Yeah...these are the most common ones...
Did you know these beauties came from America and in fact there are over 200 different varieties? Some are red, others are blue, others are red inside others red outside, so many, if you put them side by the side, it is a colourful mash! (Psss: the largest potato seedbank in Europe is in...Scotland! That's right!)

Nutrition:
Tatties get the bad name for being mainly carbs, but we need carbs to get energy, so in moderation, they are good for you!
Second, tatties also are a good source of vitamin C and potassium.

Growing:
Tatties are good fun to grow, they are very flexible in terms of soil, they look pretty and give nice flowers to look at and when they are a bit tired of growing, it is time to harvest and cook them and eat them, yum yum!

We got some support from the Linlithgow Allotment Society and have some potatoes for you!
Our new project: let's grow and learn some new varieties of potatoes you have never heard of.
Who fancy joining our potato squad?
